Portage Trail System
The
Trail
Nestled alongside the Assiniboine River, about halfway between Winnipeg and Brandon, lies the Portage la Prairie Trails. This 15km system of hand-built singletrack has grown from simple riverside trails to a true shared-use MTB and hiking destination in Southern Manitoba.
Basic dirt trails dating back 15+ years have grown to be a diverse network over the past 5 years through efforts by the Portage Junk Yard Dogs Cycling Club (JYD) in cooperation with local landowners and the city of Portage la Prairie. Riverbanks with landmarks from past industrial and landfill use have proven to be the perfect canvas for flowy, engaging, and often technical trails. Engaging dirt and wood features, technical climbs, and even log skinnies can now be found throughout the network.
With strong community support behind the project, the trails have become a staple of outdoor recreation for locals and those from nearby. Fat biking and winter hiking can be had once the snow falls, and those looking to cross-country ski can find 7km of trails groomed by JYD on the Portage Golf Course. Day Passes are available for $10; annual memberships are available for $40 for individuals and $60 for families to enjoy the regularly maintained and modified trail system. Please see the Portage Junk Yard Dogs website for information and the club’s FB page for trail condition updates.
